I.B.E.W. Local 24 works to secure the futures of its members and open doors to all sorts of possibilities for them! In fact, union workers like those in Local 24 are more likely than their nonunion counterparts to receive higher wages and benefits such as health care and pensions, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Local 24 has the programs in place to ensure that our members are taken care of during their careers and afterwards, so they can work, live and retire with dignity and security.

LOCAL 24 WAGES

I.B.E.W. Local 24 electricians earn some of the very best wages in the industry – data shows that union workers, on average, make 27% more per week than nonunion workers. We can secure our members good pay because the I.B.E.W. has a signed contract with area employers, enabling over 2,000 union members working for over 80 signatory contractors to receive these wages.

What’s more, the agreement comes with many other benefits, such as 8-hour scheduled workdays; overtime pay at the rate of time-and-a-half; double-time pay for work performed over 16 straight hours and on Sundays and holidays; second shift 8-hour pay at 7-1/2 hours worked plus 10%; third shift 8-hour pay at 7 hours worked plus 15%; and weekly pay days.

LOCAL 24 PENSIONS

I.B.E.W. Local 24 provides its electricians with “defined benefit” pensions, so our members receive benefits through their entire lives (in contrast to traditional retirement plans such as a 401(k), which only pay until a balance is depleted). The U.S. Department of Labor recently reported that 79% of union workers, like the members of I.B.E.W. Local 24, have pension plans versus 44 percent of nonunion workers, and 70% of union workers have defined-benefit retirement coverage compared with only 16% of nonunion workers.

Local 24’s members have three separate pensions: the National Electrical Benefit Fund, the Local 24 Pension Fund and the I.B.E.W. International Pension.  Employers pay a set amount to your pension fund as defined in your negotiated wage package – that amount is never subtracted from wages and once a member is vested, they can not lose the benefits they have earned.

The funds' assets have grown almost fifteen-fold since 1980, from under $8 million in 1980 to more than $120 million today.

By becoming a member of Local 24, when you retire, you’ll collect all three pensions, an annuity and social security.

HEALTHCARE

I.B.E.W. Local 24 negotiates health care benefits for members and their families – and the cost of the initial coverage never comes out of our members’ pockets! These benefits are provided 100% by the union employer through the Local 24 Health Fund, with no payroll deduction from members.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 73 percent of union workers in medium and large establishments had medical care benefits in 1999, compared with only 51 percent of nonunion workers.

With the Local 24 Health Fund, our members can receive comprehensive family coverage, including:
• Major Medical Coverage
• Dental
• Vision
• Prescription Drug
• Well Baby Care
• Employee Assistance Program
• Death Benefit
• Accidental Death and Dismemberment Coverage
• Short and Long Term Disability Insurance

ANNUITY PROGRAMS

I.B.E.W. Local 24 members are also provided with our Severance and Annuity Fund (S&A Fund), which is a “defined contribution” pension plan into which union employers contribute a defined amount of money per hour to individual accounts set up for retirement. Money contributed to accounts accumulates tax-free until retirement, when retirees (or their spouses) can elect how to have their benefits paid.

Benefits also can be paid to members who become permanently disabled; members who leave the industry; and beneficiaries should members pass away.

The S&A Fund is administered by outside investment counselors and provides 10 different investment options from which to choose, and accounts are valued daily, allowing members to make changes and track investment performances on a regular basis via the phone or internet.
