George S. Thornton,"Reds", age 91 of Ellicott City died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Howard Park, attended Forest Park High School and was a WW II veteran. He married Elizabeth (Betty) Redmond and shared 53 years of marital bliss, raising 6 children. The family moved to Ellicott City in 1969. He and Betty enjoyed tennis, traveling and social events with their large group of neighborhood, high school and fraternity friends. After his retirement as an electrical estimator he remained active in the Tall Cedars and his community. He competed in Senior Olympics and maintained a leadership role for many years volunteering for Special Olympics Howard County. He was an inspiration to all who knew him as a man of integrity, kindness and love who had a wonderful sense of adventure. Preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, he is survived by his children, Linda Kern (Bob), Deborah Kravik (Mark), Cynthia Thornton, Timothy Thornton (Jerry), Kacy Thomas (Lee) and Kelly D'Ambrosio (Carey), 20 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Tuesday April 26, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 3755 St. Paul Drive, Ellicott City MD 21043.
